I’ve always admired the Leica brand from afar but for one reason or another haven’t gotten around to pulling the trigger on one for myself. That is until now. I’ve been waiting for the D-Lux 5 to arrive and it’s finally here. But sadly, after all this time and admiration I feel kinda shallow for wanting to buy it vs. Panasonic’s LX5. Engadget’s write-up makes them seem like relative equals with the exception of that gorgeous red beauty mark on Leica’s upper left cheek.
So here’s my question…is the red dot worth an extra $500?

Stumble It!
Some say Leica runs their own firmware on these machines, making their image results quite different from Panasonic’s clone. I confirm that with the D-lux 4.
And of course, they throw Lightroom in as a bundle. So, in reality, you are also getting a good software with that markup.
Hi Brad, all depends of your needs. Personaly I found my jpeg from the D-LUX 4 much better than the ones of the LX3 of my girlfriend. Even better, with the D-LUX 5, you’ll have Lightroom 3 instead silkypix which sounds not really good and no professional at all. I think the Leica is more for people who like pretty objects and don’t sale and buy cameras every 6 months. The leica one is really a piece of art. I own many cameras of many brands, canon, nikon, samsung, leica, but I have to say that since i’ve my D-LUX 4 (a year now) I much prefer take it with me instead carrying cameras and heavy lenses a whole day on my shoulder. But hey! everyone’s different, don’t you think?
The last words, get the LX5 or D-LUX 5 and you won’t make a bad choice anyway
This is cheesy. People are missing the point. It’s not just a status symbol http://http://bit.ly/cFpmet
Already have lightroom and Photoshop CS5. Why would I pay $799 for this package when the Panasonic LX5 is $399 on Amazon… with free shipping as well?
Longer warranty? I have yet to use a warranty for anything digital past the first 3 months. If it works OK then it seems to keep on working.
A steep price for a red dot.
Hey, the D LUX5 is around 70% smaller, that’s some different, check snapsort.com
I compare my lx5 with my 1964 Volvo PV544.I have yet to find any thing it can not do.
